Do you find yourself feeling stressed out everyday because you just can’t find enough time in a day to do all the things you had planned? The truth is most of us can probably relate to this. We live in a very fast paced world, where the day just doesn’t seem to have enough hours and we’re constantly playing catch up for all the things we don’t accomplish in the previous days and it then becomes a never ending pattern. I ask myself everyday, “when will I finally catch up with everything?” One thing I have learned so far, is that taking one thing at a time and completing it, will minimize a lot of anxiety in your life. Here are some very simple ways to reduce anxiety in your daily lives.

Be Active: You won’t believe the tremendous impact that exercise has on your daily work life. Exercise releases feel good endorphins that we all need throughout the day and it reduces the stress hormones. Exercise is known to create new brain cells which help you be a lot more productive and at the same time, exercise can produce a certain calm and more relaxed state in certain parts of the brain which help alleviate anxiety and stress.

Take a Minute to Breathe: Literally just taking 1-3 minutes for yourself throughout the day to just breathe deeply and release all the tension will go a long way. As simple as it may seem, it helps a lot to just stop what you’re doing and breathe, but really breathe. We live in such a fast paced world that we sometimes feel we cannot afford to give ourselves time to just breathe and recharge. A good way to release the tension while breathing is to inhale slowly while counting to 10 and exhale slowly counting to 10 again. Do this 3 times and you will feel a lot more relaxed yet recharged to continue your tasks for the day.

Accept the Anxiety: We probably all have been in a situation where you’re presenting a project or about to go into a job interview and your nerves are just killing you. Your heart starts beating faster to the point that you can feel your heart beat in your throat and you think… “I hope I don’t screw up”. You try to fight your nerves and anxiety by thinking you are not really anxious and sometimes do unnecessary things to play off that you’re not nervous. But none of that is necessary, the truth is that no matter how prepared you are for something, the nerves and anxiety will always exist. The key is learning to accept the anxiety, it’s normal, but just let it pass. If you don’t worry about it, it will go away on it’s own. Just have confidence, stand tall, breathe and you will succeed.

Write Everything Down:  Think of it as a treasure box for your thoughts. If we write things down, we are somehow immortalizing our thoughts without having to carry all our to do list in our heads everyday. Once you write it down, you know that you can go back to that list and see what things you still need to accomplish. Therefore, believe it or not, your brain no longer focuses on remembering that list as much, you can now take one thing at a time and start completing them. When we don’t write things down, we carry everything in our minds which makes us loose focus and we end up not being able to complete anything. Get into the habit of writing things down, this alone will relieve plenty of stress and anxiety both at work and home.

Fake It Till You Make It: Ever heard of this saying? It’s really powerful. Only you know what you know, and telling others you don’t know all the time makes you look weak. Have you ever wondered if the people you work around really know what they’re doing? Take a look around and you will see all kinds of personalities at work, some very shy and calm, others very outspoken and confident, but can you really say that you know what level of  knowledge they each have for their jobs? Probably not. But I’m sure you might think that those that are more confident and outspoken know a lot more, correct?
